PDMA KP Issues GLOF Alert for Five Upper Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued an important weather advisory for upper areas of the province. PDMA KP warned of possible Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), landslides, and flash floods in several districts.

According to the advisory, the alert covers five upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These include Chitral, Swat, Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra.

Officials said rising temperatures can increase the risk of glacial lake bursts. These events can cause sudden floods and serious damage in mountainous areas.

PDMA KP has directed district administrations to stay on high alert. Local authorities have been told to closely monitor vulnerable locations and respond quickly if conditions worsen.

The disaster authority also asked district officials to issue timely warnings to residents. Evacuation drills have also been recommended in areas considered high-risk.

The advisory urges people living near rivers and streams to remain careful. Residents have been told to avoid unnecessary travel near waterways.

Tourists visiting northern areas have also been advised to stay alert. PDMA KP asked visitors to follow all safety guidelines and avoid risky routes during bad weather.

Authorities specifically warned against driving through fast-flowing water. Officials said even shallow floodwater can be dangerous and may cause accidents.

The PDMA spokesperson also stressed the importance of public awareness. He called for awareness campaigns to help people understand safety measures and reduce possible losses.

Experts say glacial lake outburst floods have become more frequent due to climate change. Rising temperatures are melting glaciers faster, increasing pressure on mountain lakes.
