A motorcyclist was injured after a water tanker struck his motorcycle on Karachi’s Karimabad Bridge on Tuesday. The accident caused panic in the area and drew a large crowd within minutes.
According to initial reports, the collision involved a heavy water tanker and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist suffered injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Witnesses said people gathered at the scene soon after the crash. Several angry bystanders allegedly attacked the tanker driver and damaged the vehicle by smashing its windows.
The tanker driver later fled the scene before authorities could question him. Traffic Police officers reached the location shortly afterward to control the situation and begin an initial investigation.
Police also worked to restore the flow of traffic, which was affected after the accident. Officials have not yet released further details about the condition of the injured motorcyclist.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the movement of heavy vehicles on Karachi’s busy roads. Road accidents involving water tankers have remained a major public safety issue in the city.
Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collision and determine whether any traffic rules were violated. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
The latest accident comes just days after Karachi authorities introduced new measures to regulate water tankers operating across the city.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab recently announced the launch of a barcode-based identification and tracking system for all registered water tankers.
The initiative is aimed at improving transparency and reducing the influence of illegal water tanker operators. Officials believe the new system will also help citizens identify authorised vehicles more easily.
Under the new system, every registered water tanker has been assigned a unique barcode. Citizens and government officials can scan the barcode to verify whether a tanker is legally registered.
According to the mayor, scanning the code provides detailed information about the vehicle. The data includes the driver’s name, photograph, approved operating route, fitness certification, and the source of the supplied water.
Officials say the tracking system is designed to increase accountability within Karachi’s water distribution network. It is also expected to make it more difficult for illegal tankers to operate in the city.
The recent accident involving the motorcyclist has renewed concerns about road safety despite ongoing efforts to improve regulation. Many residents continue to call for stricter enforcement of traffic laws for heavy vehicles.
Authorities have urged drivers of large commercial vehicles to exercise greater caution, especially on busy roads and bridges. The investigation into Tuesday’s accident is continuing, and officials are expected to release more information after completing their inquiry.
