Pakistan has reached an important milestone in advanced Cancer treatment after the Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Center (AFBMTC) in Rawalpindi successfully performed the country’s first CAR T-cell therapy.
The treatment was given to a 21-year-old patient suffering from relapsed and refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This is a serious blood Cancer that had returned twice despite previous treatment attempts.
According to officials at AFBMTC, the patient received locally prepared anti-CD19 CAR T-cell therapy on June 18, 2026. The therapy showed positive results within two weeks. By Day 14, the patient achieved measurable residual disease (MRD)-negative complete remission.
The patient was later discharged from the hospital on July 3, 2026, marking a major success for Pakistan’s healthcare system.
Medical experts say CAR T-cell therapy is one of the most advanced forms of Cancer treatment available today. It uses the patient’s own immune cells, modifies them in the lab, and sends them back into the body to fight cancer cells.
This treatment is especially important for patients who have exhausted standard treatment options. It offers new hope for aggressive blood cancers that are difficult to treat.
The Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Center said this achievement was made possible after years of planning and preparation. The process involved doctors, cell-processing scientists, lab experts, and nursing teams working together under the Army Medical Corps.
Hospital officials also praised the bravery of the young patient and his family. They said their trust played an important role in making this historic treatment possible.
The success of this first CAR T-cell therapy is seen as a major step forward for Pakistan’s medical sector. It could help expand access to advanced Cancer care inside the country.
Experts believe this breakthrough may open the door for more cellular and immune-based therapies in the future. It may also reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialized treatment.
