Islamabad International Airport will temporarily close its main runway for scheduled maintenance over an 11-day period, according to reports.
The temporary closure will begin on July 7 and continue until July 17. During this period, the main runway will remain unavailable every day from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Airport authorities have planned the maintenance work to improve runway safety and operational efficiency. The project involves removing rubber deposits left behind by aircraft tyres during take-off and landing.
Over time, aircraft tyres leave layers of rubber on the runway surface. These deposits can reduce the runway’s grip, especially during wet weather. Regular removal helps maintain safe operating conditions for aircraft.
During the maintenance window, the main Airport runway will remain closed for the movement of all types of aircraft. No arrivals or departures will use the primary runway during the scheduled work hours.
To ensure flight operations continue, aircraft will use an alternative runway while maintenance is underway. Airport authorities have confirmed that flight movements will continue through the secondary runway.
Passengers are advised to remain in contact with their respective airlines for any updates regarding flight schedules. Although operations are expected to continue, minor adjustments may occur depending on air traffic conditions.
The maintenance has been scheduled during specific daytime hours to minimise disruption while allowing engineers sufficient time to complete the work safely.
Routine runway maintenance is an essential part of airport operations. It helps preserve the runway surface, improve aircraft braking performance, and ensure compliance with international aviation safety standards.
Aviation experts say removing accumulated rubber deposits improves friction between aircraft tyres and the runway. This allows aircraft to maintain better control during landing and take-off.
The Civil Aviation Authority regularly carries out such maintenance to ensure airports remain safe and fully operational. Similar runway maintenance programmes are conducted at airports around the world.
Travelers planning to fly through Islamabad International Airport between July 7 and July 17 should check the latest flight information before leaving for the airport. Airlines may issue operational updates if required during the maintenance period.
Despite the temporary closure of the main runway, airport operations are expected to continue without a complete suspension of flights. The availability of the alternative runway will help maintain scheduled air traffic while maintenance work is completed.

Officials expect the work to be completed on schedule, after which the main runway will reopen for normal aircraft operations. The maintenance is aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability, and efficiency for passengers and airlines using Islamabad International Airport.
