The Peshawar district administration has imposed a ban on swimming, bathing, and boating in rivers, canals, dams, and other waterways during the Monsoon season. The decision aims to reduce the risk of accidents caused by heavy rainfall and rising water levels.
According to the administration, the restrictions have been enforced under Section 144. The order will remain effective until the end of the Monsoon season.
Officials warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating the order. Cases will be registered under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The ban applies to several major waterways in and around Peshawar. These include the Kabul River Canal, Joli Sheikh Canal, Budhni Nullah, Bara River, Shah Alam, Naguman, Adezai River, Warsak Gravity Canal, and Warsak Lift Canal.
Authorities have also prohibited illegal boating and the use of tire tubes for water activities. Recreational activities near riverbanks and canals have also been banned to improve public safety.
The district administration said the restrictions are necessary due to increased risks during the rainy season. Heavy rainfall can rapidly raise water levels and create dangerous currents.
The decision comes as authorities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have strengthened precautionary measures. Officials are preparing for possible flooding and other weather-related emergencies during the Monsoon period.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall this season. The department warned that persistent rains could create hazardous conditions in rivers, canals, and streams across the province.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has placed several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on high alert. The warning relates to the growing risk of glacial lake outburst floods.
According to PDMA, rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melting in northern regions. This increases the possibility of sudden glacial lake bursts and flash floods.
District administrations in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra have been instructed to take preventive measures. They have also been directed to monitor vulnerable glacial areas continuously.
Rescue 1122, local administrations, and emergency response agencies have been asked to remain fully prepared. Officials have instructed them to keep rescue equipment, emergency vehicles, staff, and essential supplies ready at all times.
Authorities have advised residents to stay away from rivers and canals during periods of heavy rainfall. Tourists visiting northern areas have also been urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
