The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially KP Launches its new KP Open Wi-Fi project to provide free internet access at important public locations in Peshawar. The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi, who described it as a major step toward expanding digital connectivity and improving public services across the province.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the chief minister said the first phase of the project will provide free Wi-Fi at major government hospitals and public transport facilities in Peshawar. He added that the government wants to ensure easier internet access for students, patients, commuters, and the general public.
As part of the expansion plan, KP Launches free internet services that will soon reach all public universities and colleges across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials believe this move will support students, researchers, and teachers by providing better access to online educational resources.
The provincial government also announced that the project will gradually expand beyond Peshawar. In the next phase, free public Wi-Fi will be introduced in Abbottabad, Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. These cities represent all divisional headquarters in the province.
According to the chief minister, the project is part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s broader digital transformation strategy. He said the province has already achieved between 70 and 80 percent progress toward digital governance.
Afridi explained that the government is working to make public services paperless in different phases. Digital systems are expected to improve efficiency, reduce paperwork, and make government services more accessible to citizens.
The chief minister said KP Launches this initiative in line with PTI founder Imran Khanโs vision of expanding digital services across Pakistan. He added that internet access has become an important tool for education, employment, business, and innovation.
He also highlighted the rapid growth of Pakistanโs e-commerce sector. According to Afridi, online businesses are creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship and helping young people build successful careers through digital platforms.
The chief minister stressed that creating economic opportunities for youth remains one of the government’s top priorities. He said reliable internet access can help young entrepreneurs develop businesses, improve digital skills, and participate in the growing online economy.
Afridi also expressed concern over internet slowdowns and service disruptions. He said such interruptions negatively affect students, freelancers, businesses, and the country’s digital economy.
He pointed out that many merged districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa still lack basic telecommunications infrastructure. According to him, several remote areas continue to face poor internet connectivity and limited mobile phone coverage.
The government plans to continue improving telecommunications services in underserved regions. Officials believe better connectivity will help reduce the digital divide and improve access to education, healthcare, and government services.
