Pakistan has started discussions with Netflix and other leading global streaming platforms to expand the international reach of Pakistani films and television dramas. The initiative aims to create long-term opportunities for local creators and strengthen the country’s creative industry.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal announced the development through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He said the government is working to secure sustainable partnerships with Netflix and other major OTT platforms.
According to the minister, Pakistani dramas and films have gained strong popularity across many countries. He said the country’s creative industry has become an important part of Pakistan’s export strategy under the Uraan Pakistan initiative.
Ahsan Iqbal stated that Pakistani entertainment deserves greater international recognition. He said local productions continue to receive appreciation from audiences around the world.
The minister noted that global streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are important gateways to international viewers. However, he claimed that regional political issues have limited the visibility of Pakistani content on these platforms for many years.
He said the government wants to change that situation by working directly with international streaming companies. The goal is to ensure Pakistani creators receive fair opportunities to showcase their work to global audiences.
According to the minister, discussions are focused on improving the regional framework that determines content availability. Pakistan hopes these talks will help local productions gain wider representation on international platforms.
He added that the government is not only seeking partnerships with global companies but is also planning to develop Pakistan’s own independent OTT platform. The proposed platform would promote Pakistani stories, culture, and entertainment to viewers worldwide.
Officials believe this approach will create new opportunities for filmmakers, producers, actors, writers, and other professionals working in the entertainment industry. It may also help generate additional export revenue through creative content.
The government considers the cultural and creative sector an important contributor to economic growth. Under the Uraan Pakistan initiative, increasing cultural exports is one of the country’s long-term priorities.
Industry experts have often highlighted the international success of Pakistani television dramas. Many productions have built large audiences across South Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and other regions through television broadcasts and digital platforms.
Expanding access to global streaming services could allow more viewers to discover Pakistani productions. It could also encourage international collaborations and increase investment in local content.
The discussions with Netflix and other streaming companies are still ongoing. No final agreement has been announced yet.

The government hopes these efforts will strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global digital entertainment sector and create lasting opportunities for local talent.
