Several University Road sections in Karachi have been reopened to traffic after the completion of key construction work, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters. Authorities say the latest development will improve connectivity and reduce congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads.
Officials confirmed that the newly completed carriageways between Hassan Square and Jail Road are now open in both directions. Motorists can travel along the route without major interruptions, marking another milestone in the ongoing improvement of the University Road corridor.
The reopening of these University Road sections is expected to reduce pressure on nearby roads that had been carrying diverted traffic during construction.
Authorities also announced that the road connecting Jail Road with Mazar-e-Quaid has been reopened. The restored link is expected to make travel easier for commuters heading toward central Karachi and surrounding areas.
Traffic officials believe the reopening will improve the movement of public and private vehicles throughout the corridor. The completed road network is also expected to reduce travel times during peak hours.
According to officials, these strategic road improvements are part of broader efforts to modernize Karachi’s transport infrastructure. Better traffic flow is expected to benefit commuters, businesses, and public transport services operating in the area.
The authorities added that the stretch between Safari Park and NIPA had already been completed and opened for traffic earlier. That section has been operating normally while work continued on other parts of the project.
Construction is still underway on the remaining section from Safora to Mazar-e-Quaid. Officials said work is progressing steadily and will continue until the remaining portions are completed.
Once finished, the entire corridor is expected to provide smoother travel across eastern and central Karachi. The project is also expected to improve access to educational institutions, hospitals, commercial centers, and residential areas located along University Road.
The reopening of additional University Road sections follows the resumption of construction work earlier this year. In April, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) had officially restarted work on the long-delayed project.
The announcement came during a visit by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who reviewed progress on several Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) sections across the city. Senior officials from the FWO and relevant government departments also attended the inspection.
During the briefing, officials informed the chief minister that the FWO had taken responsibility for construction on the stretch between Islamia College and the Meteorological Department. They also said work had gained momentum after the transfer of responsibilities.
Authorities expressed confidence that the pace of construction would continue to improve. They said visible progress would become more noticeable as work advances on the remaining sections.
University Road is one of Karachi’s busiest transport corridors. It connects several important neighborhoods and serves thousands of commuters every day. Any disruption on the route often causes heavy traffic across nearby roads.
Officials believe reopening these University Road sections will significantly improve traffic conditions while construction continues on unfinished portions. They also urged motorists to follow traffic advisories and drive carefully near active construction zones.
The government has reiterated its commitment to completing the remaining work as quickly as possible. Once the full project is completed, authorities expect the upgraded corridor to improve urban mobility, reduce travel delays, and provide a more efficient road network for Karachi residents.
