The Punjab government has officially launched the Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat programme to help eligible citizens build their own homes. Under the initiative, applicants can receive interest-free loans of up to Rs500,000 for house construction.
The programme was launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif during a special ceremony. She said that owning a home is one of the biggest dreams for many families. A secure house, she added, brings peace of mind, safety, and long-term stability.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister said the Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat programme reflects the government’s commitment to improving housing conditions across Punjab. She said the initiative aims to support low- and middle-income families who need financial assistance to build safe homes.
Maryam Nawaz also expressed grief over the recent tragedy in Lahore’s Kahna area. She said the loss of children in the incident deeply saddened her and that she shared the pain of the affected families.
She expressed hope that the Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat programme would help prevent similar tragedies in the future by encouraging the construction of stronger and safer homes. According to her, every family deserves a roof that protects them and provides a secure living environment.
Under the new scheme, eligible citizens will receive interest-free loans of up to Rs500,000. The financial support is intended to reduce the burden of construction costs and make home ownership more accessible.
Officials said the loan will be repaid over a period of nine years. Beneficiaries will not be required to make any payments during the first three months after receiving the loan. This grace period is designed to give families time to begin construction before repayments start.
After the initial three-month exemption, borrowers will pay a monthly installment of Rs4,700 until the loan is fully repaid. The government believes the repayment plan is affordable for eligible households and will allow more families to benefit from the programme.
Maryam Nawaz said the Punjab government remains focused on improving public welfare through practical initiatives. She added that housing is an essential need and that better living conditions can improve the quality of life for thousands of families.
The chief minister also said the government wants to ensure that every deserving citizen has the opportunity to live with dignity. She noted that access to safe housing is an important step toward social and economic stability.
The Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat programme is expected to support many families who struggle to arrange funds for home construction. By offering interest-free financing, the government hopes to encourage safe and planned residential development across the province.
