Punjab Launches ‘Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi, Sanjhi Sabzi’ Vegetable Scheme

The Punjab government has launched a new community welfare initiative called Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi to help families cope with rising food prices. The program aims to provide free seasonal vegetables through local cultivation and public participation.

Named “Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi, Sanjhi Sabzi”, the project encourages the use of government-owned land and unused public spaces for growing vegetables. The harvested produce is then distributed free of cost to people based on their household needs.

The initiative was introduced under the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The government says the project is designed to reduce the financial burden on low-income families affected by inflation.

Under the scheme, seasonal vegetables are being cultivated on government buildings in urban areas and on public land in rural parts of Muzaffargarh district. Authorities believe this model can improve food access while promoting community participation.

Officials confirmed that vegetables are currently being grown on 140 different plots. These cultivation sites cover a total area of 139 kanals. The harvested vegetables are now reaching residents without any payment.

The Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi initiative follows a simple community-based approach. Instead of selling vegetables at subsidized prices, the government is providing them free of charge. This strategy aims to support families facing increasing household expenses.

According to officials, the project first started in a Christian community village in Muzaffargarh. Local residents welcomed the initiative and later expanded it through voluntary efforts.

Community members began growing additional vegetables on their own. They then shared the produce with other families living nearby. Authorities described this response as an example of strong public cooperation.

The success of the pilot project has encouraged the Punjab government to expand the program. Officials believe the model can be adopted in many other districts across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed deputy commissioners throughout Punjab to launch similar Sasti Nahi Muft Sabzi projects in their respective districts. The government wants every district to make use of available public land for vegetable cultivation.

The broader goal is to transform unused government spaces into productive community farms. Officials say this approach can strengthen food security while reducing the impact of inflation on vulnerable households.

The expansion also reflects the government’s focus on community-driven welfare programs. By involving local residents in cultivation and distribution, the initiative promotes shared responsibility and social support.

Authorities expect the program to grow further as more districts join the campaign. They believe increased participation will help more families receive fresh seasonal vegetables without additional financial pressure.

The Punjab government says the initiative is not only about free food. It is also intended to encourage community cooperation, make better use of public land, and provide practical relief during a period of rising living costs.
