The UAE has announced a major investment to strengthen its natural gas sector. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will invest $6.2 billion in a new offshore gas development project in Abu Dhabi. The investment is part of the country’s long-term strategy to increase gas production and meet growing global energy demand.
According to ADNOC, the company has made the final investment decision for the offshore Umm Shaif Gas Cap project. The development will be carried out in partnership with France’s TotalEnergies, Italy’s Eni, and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).
The project is expected to produce more than 600 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day starting in 2030. It will also produce associated gas liquids, helping increase the country’s energy output.
ADNOC said the investment supports its wider plan to develop the UAE’s natural gas resources. The company aims to improve domestic energy production while expanding its role in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market.
UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said ADNOC is moving faster with its integrated gas strategy. He stated that the company wants to unlock more of the country’s gas reserves to support future energy needs.
Al Jaber also said the project will strengthen the UAE’s LNG platform. He noted that international demand for natural gas continues to increase, creating new opportunities for the country to expand its energy exports.
The investment comes at a time when Gulf energy producers are facing regional challenges. Recent tensions in the Middle East have affected energy infrastructure and raised concerns about supply routes.
The region has also experienced disruptions following Iranian attacks and the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas exports, making its security vital for global energy markets.
Earlier this year, the UAE announced that its Habshan gas-processing complex in Abu Dhabi would not return to full operating capacity until next year. The facility was affected during the recent Middle East conflict, delaying its full recovery.
