The planned shutdown of Lahore’s Metro Bus service has been temporarily postponed. The service was expected to stop operating from August 11.
The decision followed last-minute discussions between VEDA and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA). The talks have allowed the service to continue for now.
Thousands of Lahore residents rely on the Metro Bus for daily travel. The planned suspension had raised concerns about major transport difficulties across the city.
VEDA had warned that it could suspend the entire service from August 11, 2026. The operator cited increasing fuel costs as the main reason behind the threat.
The company said it could no longer manage the rising diesel expenses. It also raised concerns about the existing reimbursement arrangement.
Following renewed negotiations, the immediate suspension has been put on hold. Officials confirmed that discussions between VEDA and PMA are still underway.
However, the dispute over fuel supplies has not been resolved. The operator and the authority continue to hold different positions on the issue.
VEDA has argued that PMA is responsible for arranging fuel for the service. The operator referred to a July 29 court order in support of its position.
According to VEDA, it contacted PMA twice regarding the fuel issue. The operator claimed that no effective arrangement was made after those requests.
The matter was discussed again during a meeting held on August 6. PMA reportedly told VEDA that further Punjab government instructions were needed.
The required approval has prevented the fuel arrangement from being implemented. VEDA subsequently issued what it described as a final notice.
The operator warned that services could be suspended without a reliable fuel supply. It also said PMA would be responsible for any resulting disruption.
VEDA has reserved its legal, contractual and arbitration rights in the ongoing dispute. The company has also continued to demand a solution to the fuel issue.
Meanwhile, the Metro Bus service is currently operating along its 27-kilometre route. Buses are running according to their regular schedule.
The temporary relief may not last if the dispute remains unresolved. A permanent agreement between VEDA and PMA is still needed.
VEDA says diesel prices have increased significantly since operations began. It believes the current reimbursement mechanism does not adequately cover rising costs.
The operator has warned that growing fuel expenses are putting pressure on its finances. It says government intervention is needed to maintain uninterrupted operations.
PMA has maintained a different position on the matter. The authority says it cannot implement the fuel arrangement without approval from the Punjab government.
