Pakistan’s lawmakers have raised concerns about slow internet speeds and unreliable connectivity across the country. They have questioned the government’s 5G rollout while existing 4G services continue to face problems in several areas.
The issue was discussed during a National Assembly session. Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology Sabeen Ghoury informed lawmakers that 5G services had been launched in 24 cities. She said the government planned to expand coverage after the network became stable in these locations.
However, lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of existing internet services. They stressed that improving connectivity should remain a priority alongside the introduction of newer technology.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns About 4G Internet Services
Presiding Officer Abdul Qadir Patel and other lawmakers criticised the country’s internet performance. Some claimed that connectivity had worsened since the current government took office.
Patel questioned the decision to introduce 5G services while users continued experiencing problems with existing networks. He asked, “Has 4G passed away that 5G has been introduced?”
His remarks highlighted concerns about the quality of 4G services across Pakistan. Lawmakers argued that introducing advanced technology would offer limited benefits if existing networks remained unreliable.
During the session, Ghoury was also questioned about the meaning of 5G technology. She could not explain the term when asked, prompting Aseefa Bhutto Zardari to offer an explanation.
Aseefa also highlighted internet connectivity problems in different parts of the country. She specifically mentioned Nawabshah, where she said neither 4G nor 5G services were working.
Her remarks drew attention to the challenges faced by residents in areas with limited network coverage. Reliable internet access remains important for communication, education, businesses, and other digital activities.
Government Links Network Problems to Stability and Security
Responding to concerns, Ghoury said the government intended to expand 5G coverage to additional cities. However, further expansion would depend on network stability in the initial locations.
She also explained that security challenges had affected mobile network services in certain areas. These challenges included unrest and terrorism, which had disrupted 3G and 2G connectivity.
The government’s response indicated that network expansion would depend on both technical performance and local security conditions. However, lawmakers continued to stress the need for better internet services.
Reliable Internet Remains a Key Demand
The discussion highlighted the gap between introducing new technology and improving everyday internet access. While 5G offers the potential for faster connections, users also need dependable existing services.
Poor 4G connectivity can affect people who rely on mobile internet for work, education, and communication. Businesses also depend on stable connections to manage online operations and serve customers.
Lawmakers called for faster internet speeds and more reliable network performance across Pakistan. Their concerns focused on ensuring that users benefit from improved connectivity before further technology expansion.
The debate has renewed attention on the country’s digital infrastructure and internet service quality. As 5G services expand, the government faces pressure to address existing network problems.
