Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has invited Karachi-based Fixit activists to help address the growing problem of uncovered manholes in Peshawar.

The governor said the provincial capital needs approximately 11,000 manhole covers to improve public safety and protect residents from potential accidents.

He made the remarks while speaking to the media during a visit to the under-construction Jamil Chowk underpass on Peshawar’s Ring Road on November 6.

Kundi appealed to the Fixit activists in Karachi to visit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and support efforts to install the missing covers.

The issue has raised concerns over the safety of pedestrians, motorcyclists and other road users. Uncovered drainage openings can become particularly dangerous during rainfall and at night, when they are difficult to identify.

The governor’s latest remarks follow an earlier meeting at the Governor House on October 23, where he directed Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) to prioritise the installation of missing manhole covers.

Officials informed the meeting that approximately 11,000 manholes across Peshawar were without covers. They also briefed the governor on WSSP’s municipal services and operational responsibilities across 42 union councils.

Kundi stressed the need for practical measures to improve sanitation services and address civic problems affecting residents.

The governor’s invitation highlights the potential role of cooperation between public authorities, private organisations and citizens in addressing urban infrastructure problems.

Fixit is a Karachi-based civic initiative known for highlighting public infrastructure and sanitation issues. Its activists have previously drawn attention to uncovered drains and other civic problems.

During his November 6 visit, Kundi also reviewed construction progress on the Jamil Chowk underpass. He directed the relevant authorities to speed up work and avoid unnecessary delays.

The underpass is being constructed on Peshawar’s Ring Road to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The governor also mentioned traffic problems at other busy locations, including University Road, and called for further infrastructure improvements.

No formal agreement or installation schedule involving Fixit was announced in the reported remarks.

The proposed involvement of the Karachi-based initiative could provide additional support for efforts to address Peshawar’s uncovered manholes. However, the installation work and its timeline remain to be confirmed.
