Pakistan Set to launch Digital Transport System in Rawalpindi

Pakistan is preparing to launch its first fully digital transport system in Rawalpindi. The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will oversee the development of the necessary software for this innovative public transport initiative.

The project includes setting up a control room and implementing an e-tag system at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal, which will collect detailed data on vehicles, such as registration, ownership, color, fitness certificates, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and tracking information.

This control room will monitor all vehicles entering and exiting the terminal, ensuring that only those meeting safety and service standards can operate. Modeled after systems in Paris, London, and the U.S., this initiative is a first for Pakistan and may be expanded to other Punjab cities if successful.

Additionally, the system will enable citizens to submit online complaints about public and government transport services. Rashid Ali, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), lauded the project as a significant step forward, noting that IT support is being provided by the Punjab Government, with senior officials visiting Rawalpindi on September 2 to finalize the project.
