Nicaragua Ends Diplomatic Ties with Israel

Nicaragua has announced the termination of its diplomatic relations with Israel, describing the Israeli government as “fascist” and “genocidal.”

In a statement, Nicaragua cited Israel’s attacks on Palestinian territories as the reason for the decision. Earlier that day, the nation’s congress passed a resolution urging action to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the Gaza conflict.

Nicaragua’s government also expressed concern over the conflict spreading to Lebanon and posing serious threats to Syria, Yemen, and Iran.

The Middle East remains on high alert after Iran fired missiles at Israel on October 1. Iran, a supporter of Hezbollah, which Israel has recently targeted in deadly strikes, is a key ally of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.

Nicaragua has faced increasing international isolation since Ortega’s 2018 crackdown on anti-government protests, which reportedly resulted in around 300 deaths.
