Millions of American TikTok users experienced a brief shutdown of the app over the weekend, marking the first ban in five years. Service was restored less than 24 hours later after President-elect Donald Trump announced he would reinstate access, crediting TikTok for its role in connecting with young voters.
The move represents a significant shift from Trump’s earlier stance when he sought to ban the app in 2020 over national security concerns. He now suggests a joint venture with 50% US ownership to address these issues.

While users expressed relief, many questioned whether changes to TikTok’s ownership might alter its user experience. Content creators, some of whom rely on TikTok for substantial income, also voiced mistrust toward the government after the ordeal.
For most, however, the app’s return outweighed lingering concerns. As one user put it, “I just wanted my app back.”
