Google Maps Updates Gulf of Mexico Name to ‘Gulf of America’ for U.S. Users

Google Maps has updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for users in the United States, following an official name change by the Trump administration.

This change, now visible on both web and mobile versions of Google Maps, reflects the U.S. government’s decision to rename the large body of water situated between Mexico’s eastern coast and Florida’s Panhandle.

According to Google, it adheres to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the official U.S. database for geographic names.

Users in Mexico will continue to see “Gulf of Mexico,” while international users will see both names, with “Gulf of America” appearing in parentheses.

Google determines a user’s displayed location name based on data from their mobile operating system, SIM card, and network settings. Desktop users may experience variations depending on their device settings and search preferences.

Meanwhile, Apple Maps has not implemented this change and still redirects searches for “Gulf of America” to the Gulf of Mexico.

Other navigation platforms, such as MapQuest, have not followed suit, while Google-owned Waze displays both names in search results for the Gulf of Mexico but does not recognize searches for “Gulf of America.”
