WASHINGTON โ Senior officials from the United States and Iran are expected to travel to Switzerland for important negotiations aimed at addressing key regional and diplomatic issues.
According to reports, US envoy Steve Witkoff will take part in a high-level meeting in Switzerland. The talks come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East and growing international attention on Iranโs nuclear programme.
Media reports also stated that Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, is already present in Switzerland ahead of the discussions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to arrive on Saturday to participate in the negotiations.
The planned meeting follows recent developments involving the United States, Iran, and regional conflicts. Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance had been scheduled to visit Switzerland. However, his trip was cancelled due to clashes involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The diplomatic situation changed after both sides reached a 14-point interim agreement. Under the arrangement, the parties have been given 60 days to work on issues related to Iranโs nuclear programme and other complex regional disputes.
Officials hope the agreement will create an opportunity for further dialogue and reduce tensions in the region. The upcoming discussions in Switzerland are expected to focus on finding practical solutions and building confidence between the parties.
Meanwhile, Iranโs Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh said Tehran remains open to gradual progress in negotiations with Washington. He stated that meaningful progress depends on the United States demonstrating a serious commitment to the process.
Khatibzadeh also stressed the importance of ensuring that Israel follows the terms of a memorandum of understanding related to Lebanon. He said Iran believes diplomacy remains the only effective path toward resolving disputes.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, the Iranian official said the United States must guarantee that Israel permanently stops actions that could undermine the agreement. He argued that lasting stability requires all sides to respect their commitments.
The deputy foreign minister also criticized recent Israeli military operations in Lebanon. He warned that continued attacks could lead to serious and immediate consequences for the region.
