PM Shehbaz Congratulates Pope Leo XIV, Highlights Importance of Interfaith Harmony and Peace

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the global Catholic community on the election of Pope Leo XIV, calling it a historic moment of “hope and inspiration” for millions worldwide. In a social media message on Friday, the prime minister expressed his warm congratulations and stated that the election marks a new chapter for global unity.

He also emphasized Pakistan’s strong relationship with the Holy See and its commitment to fostering interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and promoting peace and human dignity.

Pope Leo XIV, previously U.S. Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis, who passed away last month. Leo XIV, who holds Peruvian citizenship from his missionary work, is the first American to ascend to the papacy.

Upon his first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo signaled his leadership style through his choice of name, words, and attire. The selection of the name Leo XIV was seen as a tribute to Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of social justice and workers’ rights, suggesting that Pope Leo XIV may focus on addressing global poverty and labor issues. His first public words, “La pace sia con tutti voi” (Peace be with you), highlighted his commitment to global peace, in line with appeals for peace in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East.

Unlike his predecessor, Pope Francis, who avoided traditional papal regalia, Pope Leo XIV wore a red mozzetta over his white cassock, signaling a balance between tradition and reform. This may position him to bridge divides between conservative and progressive factions within the Church.

Pakistan, which has had diplomatic relations with the Vatican since 1961, has consistently emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue in its foreign policy. Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to religious cooperation and peaceful relations in his message.
