Trump Urges Pakistan and India to Prioritize Trade Over Regional Conflicts

Former U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of trade diplomacy in promoting lasting peace between Pakistan and India, two nuclear-armed neighbors that recently faced a tense military standoff.

Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh, Trump highlighted the role the United States played in defusing tensions between the two countries. He called the ceasefire a major diplomatic achievement and explained that his strategy focused on encouraging economic cooperation over conflict.

“I urged both countries to turn away from hostility and prioritize trade,” Trump stated. “I told their leaders, ‘Forget about weapons—focus on commerce. You both produce excellent goods—trade them with each other.’”

Trump commended the leadership of both nations, describing them as smart and capable, and credited U.S. intervention for halting the escalation. “Things came to a stop—and I hope it stays that way,” he remarked, warning that the situation had been dangerously close to a major crisis.

Pakistan’s ambassador to the U.S., Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, also acknowledged the fragile nature of the ceasefire but appreciated the American role in easing tensions. He stressed the need for ongoing U.S. involvement, especially in resolving long-standing issues such as the Kashmir conflict.
