In a surprising turn, South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a prominent seven-year run with the Proteas.

Klaasen shared the emotional decision on social media, stating that stepping away was necessary for his family and personal future. “It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with,” he wrote.

Having debuted in 2018, Klaasen appeared in 122 international matches and built a reputation as a fearless middle-order batter and sharp wicketkeeper. His ODI stats include 2,141 runs at an average of 43.69, while in T20Is, he struck 1,000 runs at a blazing strike rate of 141.84.

The 33-year-old had already retired from Test cricket in early 2024 and played in key tournaments like the 2023 World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup. His exit now leaves a significant gap in South Africa’s white-ball squad.

Cricket fans and former teammates are pouring in tributes to Klaasen, hailing him as one of the most impactful wicketkeeper-batters in modern South African cricket.
