SRI LANKA: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has officially postponed the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2025, which was scheduled to start on June 6 in Sri Lanka.
The postponement comes in response to a request from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva, who cited adverse weather conditions and a rising chikungunya virus outbreak as major concerns. His formal appeal to ACC President Mohsin Naqvi led to immediate consultations and the final decision.
“The decision… comes after consultations on a letter from Mr. Shammi Silva… citing adverse weather and health concerns due to the spread of chikungunya,” the ACC said in a statement.
While new dates for the tournament are yet to be announced, the ACC assured all teams, fans, and stakeholders that efforts are underway to reschedule the event soon. President Mohsin Naqvi reaffirmed the council’s commitment:
“We understand the importance of this tournament in shaping the future of women’s cricket in the region. The ACC remains dedicated to creating platforms for young women cricketers.”
Meanwhile, rumors that India might pull out of ACC tournaments due to political tensions were dismissed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified:
“There has been no discussion or decision to withdraw from any ACC event. Our focus is on the IPL and the upcoming England series.”
