UN ‘Names and Shames’ Israel for 2nd Year Over Child Rights Violations

UN ‘Names and Shames’ Israel for 2nd Year Over Child Rights Violations

For the second year in a row, the United Nations has included Israel in its annual report documenting serious violations against children in conflict areas, intensifying global scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The 2024 report, now in its 24th edition, records 41,370 confirmed cases of grave violations against children globally — such as killings, injuries, and attacks on educational and medical facilities. Israeli forces were found responsible for over 8,000 of these violations, accounting for roughly 20% of the total.

In the annex, Israel is once again identified as a party “responsible for killing and maiming children” and for “attacking schools and/or hospitals.” The listing is based on independently verified evidence and follows ongoing criticism that the UN previously avoided naming Israel due to political pressure.

Israel was first added to the list last year, and its continued inclusion has reignited international discussions about accountability and the need to protect children during armed conflicts.

The report underscores the devastating toll of war on young lives and reinforces calls for all parties, including state actors, to adhere to international humanitarian laws and standards.
