Trade talks between India and the United States have suddenly stopped. The discussions began in March 2025 and continued through four rounds. However, no agreement was reached.
Experts say the India-US ties were hurt by the May 2025 conflict between India and Pakistan. The brief clash lasted four days. U.S. President Donald Trump claimed credit for a ceasefire, but his statements caused confusion.
This led to criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Indian Parliament. Opposition leaders raised questions about the government’s handling of the situation.
Soon after the debates, tensions grew worse. President Trump placed a 25% tariff on Indian imports. He also announced new penalties on India for importing oil from Russia. These steps caused more strain on India-US ties.

This marks a big change from the past. In Trump’s first term, relations were warm. Modi and Trump often praised each other and used friendly language in public.
Analysts believe part of the problem started last year. Modi did not meet Trump during a key visit. Reports say Indian diplomats advised against it, doubting Trump’s chances of winning the election. After Trump’s re-election, his government began deporting more illegal immigrants, including many from India. Modi did not respond strongly.
Defense cooperation also suffered. In February, Trump said the U.S. would sell F-35 fighter jets to India. But Indian officials denied any such deal. Military experts in India said the jets were too expensive and not suitable for the region.
Trump’s visit to India for the upcoming Quad summit is still uncertain. Diplomats say his unpredictable style has made things difficult.
As a result, India is now looking at other global partners, like BRICS, to reduce its dependence on the U.S.
Despite current tensions, experts hope India-US ties will improve in the future through careful diplomacy.
