Dhaka Students Protest Mandatory Hijab Rules Amid Rights Concerns

Dhaka

Students in Dhaka have raised their voices against moves to impose mandatory hijab rules at their schools and colleges. At Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, students protested after a teacher’s suspension over a hijab-related dispute.

The controversy began when students accused a teacher of disciplining classmates for improper wearing of the hijab. She was suspended by the school’s administration, citing an ad hoc committee’s recommendation.

Current and former students responded with protests, demanding her reinstatement and a fair investigation. Protestors insisted that she never banned the hijab outright but only advised proper wearing.

Meanwhile, at Dhaka University, the administration updated a policy to manage exam security while respecting personal freedoms.

Now female students wearing hijab or niqab will have their identities confirmed by female staff or assistants when needed. The university also plans to explore biometric methods in the future.

These incidents reflect broader concerns about students’ rights and religious freedom. Critics worry that forcing hijab rules—whether through suspension or new identification requirements—can infringe on personal freedoms.

Protests at both institutions show students pushing back against any form of forced dress codes under the guise of security or discipline.
