European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged the European Union to strengthen its independence in global affairs. She emphasized that Europe must take a leading role as the world order continues to shift.
Speaking at a high-level forum, von der Leyen declared that βEurope must seize ‘independence’ in ‘new world order’: EU chief.β She said the continent could no longer rely entirely on external powers for security, energy, or technology.
Her remarks come at a time when the EU faces mounting geopolitical challenges. Russiaβs war in Ukraine, tensions with China, and uncertainty over U.S. foreign policy have raised questions about Europeβs long-term security and stability.
Von der Leyen stated that Europe must build stronger defense cooperation and invest more in homegrown industries. She added that reducing dependence on imported energy and critical technologies would safeguard the continentβs future.
βEurope must seize ‘independence’ in ‘new world order’: EU chief, because relying on others leaves us vulnerable,β she explained. She also highlighted the importance of unity among EU member states to achieve these goals.
Analysts note that the EU has already taken steps in this direction. Initiatives include joint defense projects, investment in renewable energy, and policies to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains. Still, experts say more must be done to ensure long-term resilience.
The speech also touched on Europeβs role in shaping global trade rules. Von der Leyen argued that the EU must lead efforts to promote fair competition, climate action, and digital innovation on the world stage.
As global power shifts accelerate, von der Leyenβs call reflects growing recognition that the EU must adapt quickly. Once again, Europe must seize ‘independence’ in ‘new world order’: EU chief, signaling a clear push for stronger autonomy in the years ahead.
