NEW YORK/DUBAI – Former US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in New York on Friday, according to a White House official. The announcement comes just days after Israel carried out a strike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders.
The official did not share details about the exact timing or the agenda of the meeting. However, analysts believe the discussion will focus on regional stability and ongoing mediation efforts in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates summoned Israel’s deputy ambassador in Abu Dhabi, expressing strong condemnation of the attack on Qatar. Officials in the UAE called the strike a blatant and cowardly act that threatens Gulf security.
Israel’s attack on Tuesday, aimed at Hamas political leaders, has sparked widespread criticism. Many regional governments warned the action could derail US-backed efforts to secure a truce in Gaza.
Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s move, describing it as unilateral and counterproductive to both US and Israeli interests. He noted that such actions could further complicate peace talks.
Qatar remains a key mediator in the Middle East, working closely with the US and Egypt on ceasefire efforts in Gaza, the release of hostages, and future plans for Palestinian territories. Al-Thani recently said that despite Israel’s actions, Qatar will not abandon its role as mediator.
The Qatari leader is also expected to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit. Both sides are likely to discuss strategies for de-escalation in the region.
The UAE, which normalized ties with Israel in 2020, has been vocal in its criticism of recent military actions. Officials stressed that any aggression against a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) state is an attack on collective Gulf security.
The meeting between Trump and Al-Thani comes at a critical time, as global attention remains focused on preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
