Youths Who Toppled Nepal Government Now Choosing New Leadership

A former DJ and his non-profit organization have emerged as key figures in Nepal’s recent political crisis. By leveraging social media platforms like Discord and Instagram, they mobilized thousands of young people to protest against government corruption and demand accountability.

The protests in Nepal quickly escalated into the deadliest political unrest the country has seen in decades. Demonstrators forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign, and violent clashes with authorities resulted in at least 72 deaths and over 1,300 injuries. The unrest followed a government ban on multiple social media platforms, which was later lifted, allowing activists to expand their online campaigns.

Sudan Gurung, the founder of Hami Nepal, played a central role in organizing and coordinating the protests. His team used messaging apps and social media to reach tens of thousands of young Nepalese, issuing calls to action, countering misinformation, and sharing emergency contacts to assist injured citizens during chaotic demonstrations.

Hami Nepal has now become an influential force in shaping the country’s interim leadership. The group successfully influenced the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Nepal’s first female prime minister in an interim capacity. They are actively involved in consultations to form a capable cabinet that will guide the country until elections scheduled on March 5.

Despite their growing influence, Gurung and his associates have made it clear they do not seek formal government positions. They describe themselves as a voice for Nepalese youth, aiming to ensure transparency, accountability, and reforms in the political system.

The movement has largely been driven by young adults, often categorized as Gen Z, who joined online groups and participated in street protests. Their engagement highlights a major shift in Nepalese politics, demonstrating how digital activism and youth involvement can directly impact governance and policy decisions.

Observers suggest that the events in Nepal may serve as a model for youth-led political movements across South Asia. The interim government now faces the dual challenge of stabilizing the country and implementing reforms recommended by the movement, while ensuring that corruption and inefficiency are addressed.

With continued involvement from digital-savvy youth and civil society groups, Nepal may witness a new era of participatory politics where young citizens play a more active and influential role in shaping the nation’s future.
