Iraq has introduced a new regulation affecting male pilgrims intending to visit the country’s holy sites. Under the updated policy, men under the age of 50 will not be granted pilgrimage visas if they are traveling alone. However, those below 50 years of age may still apply if they are accompanied by their families
This move aims to streamline the pilgrimage process and ensure orderly arrangements for visitors at Iraqβs holy shrines. The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony has assured strict compliance with these new guidelines. Spokesperson Muhammad Umar Butt emphasized that the updated policy is designed to enhance the safety and management of the influx of pilgrims
The new age restriction is part of Iraq’s broader efforts to regulate and manage the large number of pilgrims visiting annually, particularly during significant religious events such as Arbaβeen. Arbaβeen, one of the world’s largest annual pilgrimages, attracts millions of Shia Muslims to Karbala, Iraq, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein .
Travel agents and religious organizations are advised to inform potential pilgrims about the new age requirements to avoid any complications during the visa application process. It is essential for male applicants under 50 to ensure they are accompanied by family members when applying for pilgrimage visas to Iraq.
This policy change underscores Iraq’s commitment to maintaining the sanctity and safety of its religious sites while accommodating the spiritual needs of pilgrims.
