Trump Hits H-1B Visa Holders with Jaw-Dropping $100,000 Fee

Trump Hits H-1B Visa Holders with Jaw-Dropping $100,000 Fee

WASHINGTON – In a major policy shift, US President Donald Trump has introduced a new annual fee of $100,000 for the H-1B visa, dealing a significant blow to immigrants and companies relying on foreign talent. The executive order was signed with immediate effect, sparking concern across the tech industry.

Trump said that in some cases companies will now have to decide whether to pay the steep fee or hire American workers instead. The new cost will apply not only to fresh applications but also to renewals of the H-1B visa.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supported the decision, stating that the measure ensures only β€œirreplaceable” workers remain in the system. He emphasized that the policy would pressure companies to reconsider their dependence on foreign employees.

The move has alarmed top tech firms, including Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Intel, which have long used the H-1B visa program to bring in skilled workers from abroad. Industry leaders warned that the one-year trial beginning September 21 could disrupt hiring strategies and impact innovation.

President Trump also criticized technology firms for laying off thousands of American employees while still continuing to hire foreign workers through the program. Observers linked his comments to recent layoffs at major firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Salesforce.

In addition to the H-1B visa fee hike, Trump announced the launch of the new β€œGold Card” visa. This program offers US residency to wealthy foreigners willing to invest $1 million or $2 million through corporate sponsorships.

The policy shift has sent shockwaves through both immigrant communities and corporate boardrooms. Analysts believe the new rules could reshape America’s technology sector and create new barriers for skilled workers hoping to build careers in the United States.
