Japan is set to witness a historic political shift as former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi was elected the new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Saturday. Her victory positions her to become Japan’s first female prime minister, marking a major milestone in a country that ranks low in global gender equality.
Takaichi, known for her conservative views, defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, in a runoff vote during the party’s leadership election in Tokyo. She succeeds outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, as the LDP seeks to recover from a series of election losses and regain public confidence.
Because the LDP remains Japan’s largest political party, Takaichi is almost certain to assume the role of prime minister when parliament votes later this month. Analysts say her leadership could help stabilize the government as Japan faces domestic economic challenges and increasing geopolitical pressures.
The leadership election, which included five candidates — two serving and three former ministers — was decided by 295 LDP lawmakers and about one million party members. Despite representing only 1% of the Japanese population, the outcome carries major implications for the country’s political direction.

Takaichi’s immediate priorities will include addressing rising living costs, boosting wages, and strengthening defense capabilities. The LDP will also aim to rebuild alliances with moderate opposition parties, including Komeito, to secure policy support in parliament.
Her leadership will soon face a diplomatic test, with a possible meeting expected between Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump later in October. Japan’s defense spending and regional security will likely dominate discussions ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.
Political experts note that the LDP’s new leadership avoided divisive topics such as same-sex marriage, corruption scandals, and gender reforms during the campaign — issues that continue to shape public opinion.
With Sanae Takaichi at the helm, Japan stands at a pivotal moment — one that could redefine its political identity, gender landscape, and role on the global stage.
