London Police Arrest Dozens at Protest Against Palestine Action Ban

London

London police arrested dozens of people during a large protest in Trafalgar Square on Saturday. The demonstration was held against the government’s decision to ban Palestine Action, a group now labeled as a terrorist organization under UK law.

The protest went ahead despite warnings from authorities to avoid gatherings following a recent tragic attack at a Manchester synagogue. Protesters said their march was peaceful and aimed to oppose what they called an attack on freedom of expression.

Witnesses reported that hundreds gathered, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans. Police made several arrests under the Terrorism Act, saying those detained were showing support for a proscribed group. Some protesters were also arrested near Westminster Bridge for displaying banners related to Palestine Action.

Videos from the scene showed officers carrying away seated demonstrators who refused to move. Many protesters were heard chanting β€œshame on you” as police made arrests. Authorities later confirmed that most detainees would face questioning under anti-terror laws.

The UK government recently classified Palestine Action as a terrorist group, saying it was involved in violent direct actions, including property damage and threats to public safety. However, critics argue the move targets political activism and silences legitimate dissent.

Human rights observers have raised concerns over the use of terrorism laws against peaceful protesters. They warn that this approach could limit public space for political expression in the UK.

The Metropolitan Police said it deployed hundreds of officers to maintain order. Officials also urged the public to remain calm and respect ongoing security operations.

The protest marks another chapter in the growing debate over how the UK handles pro-Palestinian activism. Supporters of Palestine Action have vowed to continue peaceful demonstrations until the ban is lifted.
