ISLAMABAD: Internet users across Pakistan are facing slow connectivity and service interruptions, causing frustration for millions who rely on stable online access. Social media platforms, video calls, and remote work have all been affected as users report sluggish performance and frequent drops in connection.
According to officials, the problem stems from multiple incidents involving cuts and faults in fibre-optic cables that connect Pakistan to international networks. These technical issues have significantly impacted the overall performance of the internet across the country.
A spokesperson from the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) confirmed that intermittent outages and reduced internet speeds are expected due to scheduled maintenance on one of its submarine cables.
The company stated that an international cable consortium is repairing a faulty repeater in the system. The maintenance work began on October 14 and may continue for up to 18 hours, potentially affecting users nationwide.
Adding to the connectivity woes, mobile internet was also temporarily suspended in Islamabad and Rawalpindi due to a political protest, leaving residents with limited online access.
Pakistan has experienced several internet disruptions in recent years, primarily linked to faults in undersea cables. Experts emphasize that such incidents highlight the country’s dependency on international cable systems for digital communication.
To address these recurring issues, authorities have pledged to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. Plans for the rollout of 5G services in major cities are underway, aiming to enhance internet speed, stability, and reliability for users across the nation.
