The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered a complete ban on all commercial activities every Sunday while hearing a case related to smog and environmental pollution.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the court also directed strict enforcement of its earlier order requiring wedding halls to close by 10 PM. Deputy Commissioner Lahore, Musa Raza, appeared before the bench and presented a notification regarding the closure of markets and restaurants at 10 PM.
However, the court expressed concern over weak enforcement. “Only issuance of a notification is not sufficient; it should also be enforced strictly,” the bench remarked.
Justice Shahid Karim stated that the restrictions are aimed at controlling rising pollution and smog levels in Lahore. He emphasized that collective action is essential to improve air quality in the city.
During the hearing, WASA’s lawyer, Mian Irfan Akram, informed the court that the city’s sewerage system is being upgraded. The bench ordered WASA to submit a detailed report on its ongoing projects, including their timelines and environmental impact.
The LHC further directed the Environment Department to ensure that a director-level officer attends every hearing related to the smog case. The court then adjourned proceedings until November 7.
Earlier, the Lahore High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to combat smog, highlighting the lack of compliance with restaurant and business closure timings. Justice Shahid Karim noted that the court has been addressing smog-related issues for the past seven years.
“The court’s actions are not against anyone but meant to guide the government,” Justice Karim said. He also observed that nearly 70 percent of Lahore’s pollution comes from transport, urging citizens and authorities alike to take responsibility for cleaner air.
