Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has landed in legal trouble after a consumer court in Kota issued a notice against him for allegedly promoting misleading advertisements for a pan masala brand.
The complaint was filed by senior BJP leader and Rajasthan High Court advocate Inder Mohan Singh Honey. He accused the company manufacturing Rajshree Pan Masala and its brand ambassador Salman Khan of deceiving consumers through false claims about the productβs ingredients.
According to the petitioner, the advertisement falsely claims that Rajshree Pan Masala contains βsaffron-infused cardamomβ and βsaffron-infused pan masala.β He argued that such statements are misleading since saffron costs nearly βΉ4 lakh per kilogram, making it impossible for a βΉ5 product to contain genuine saffron.
The complaint also stated that the advertisement indirectly encourages young audiences to consume pan masala, which is a major cause of mouth cancer. The petitioner stressed that celebrities like Salman Khan, who have a strong influence on the youth, should avoid endorsing such products.
βSalman Khan is a role model for millions. In other countries, film stars do not promote products like tobacco or pan masala. Our aim is to stop misleading ads that send the wrong message to the youth,β Honey told ANI.
Following the complaint, the Kota Consumer Court issued notices to both the actor and the manufacturing company, seeking a formal response. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for November 27.
This is not the first time a celebrity endorsement has faced scrutiny in India. Legal experts say such cases highlight the growing responsibility of public figures to ensure that the products they endorse are truthful and do not harm public health.
