Islamabad, February 17, 2026 โ Islamabad authorities have announced that M-Tag issuance for motorcycles will begin from February 20, 2026. The decision was confirmed by the Director General Excise, according to official sources.
The move is part of the second phase of the ongoing electronic tagging project. Earlier, the system was limited to cars and other vehicles. Now, motorcycles will also be brought under the M-Tag system to improve traffic management and toll collection.
From February 20, motorcycle owners will be able to obtain their M-Tag from 10:00am onwards. The installation will take place at designated centers across Islamabad. Currently, 13 official points are operational in the city for e-tag services.
Authorities have made it mandatory for applicants to bring original vehicle registration documents. A valid national identity card is also required for verification. Without these documents, the M-Tag will not be issued.
The Director General Excise stated that over 223,566 vehicles have already been issued e-tags. He added that the system has helped improve transparency and reduce congestion at toll plazas.
Earlier, the National Highways Authority (NHA) introduced penalties for vehicles without M-Tag. Since June 15, 2025, a 50 percent additional toll tax has been imposed on non-tagged and low-balance vehicles.
According to NHA, the revised toll rates apply across major motorways. These include M-1 (IslamabadโPeshawar), M-2 (LahoreโIslamabad), M-3 (LahoreโAbdul Hakim), M-4 (Pindi BhattianโMultan), M-5 (MultanโSukkur), M-9 (KarachiโHyderabad), M-14 (D.I. KhanโHakla), and E-35 (HassanabdalโMansehra).
Under the updated charges, cars now pay Rs 1,800 on the IslamabadโLahore motorway. The toll for LahoreโAbdul Hakim stands at Rs 1,200, while Pindi BhattianโMultan is set at Rs 1,600.
Officials believe extending M-Tag to motorcycles will strengthen digital monitoring on highways. It will also encourage cashless travel and reduce manual handling at toll booths.

Motorcycle owners are advised to apply early to avoid penalties. Authorities say the expansion will help ensure smoother traffic flow and better enforcement of motorway regulations.
