China’s Approval Crucial as Pakistan Discusses JF-17 Jet Exports with Several Nations

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is holding high-level talks with several countries for the export of its advanced fighter aircraft. The discussions focus on the JF-17 Jet, which is jointly developed with China. Any final deal will require approval from Beijing due to shared technology rights.

Officials say negotiations are ongoing and require time. Several countries have shown strong interest in acquiring the aircraft. These talks are being handled carefully because of strategic and technical considerations.

The latest version, JF-17 Thunder Block III, is a modern 4.5-generation fighter aircraft. It is designed for multiple combat roles. The jet is equipped with an AESA radar system and long-range beyond-visual-range missiles. These features enhance its combat capability.

The performance of the aircraft recently gained attention during the May 7–10 conflict with India. Observers noted its operational effectiveness during the engagement. This exposure has increased international interest in the platform.

Countries currently in discussions include Libya, Sudan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. Officials have described these talks as confidential. They said details will only be shared after deliveries are made. The JF-17 Jet is seen as attractive due to its cost and performance balance.

Price remains a key selling point. Similar fighter jets on the global market often cost between $250 and $350 million. In comparison, the JF-17 Thunder costs around $40 to $50 million. The final price depends on configuration and weapons packages.

The project is a joint venture between Pakistan and China. Key components are manufactured in both countries. Because of this partnership, China must approve any export agreement. Officials stressed that China’s involvement is both technical and legal.

Experts familiar with the program say China controls core technology. Pakistan manages sales, but production and exports are closely coordinated. China may also support future expansion of Pakistan’s manufacturing capacity.

Sales will be limited to friendly nations only. Pakistan maintains strong defense relations with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, China, and Azerbaijan. Officials confirmed an existing agreement with Saudi Arabia but did not share details.

Interest from Turkey has also been discussed, especially in joint drone projects. Pakistan’s private sector is actively developing unmanned aerial vehicles. This reflects a growing focus on domestic defense production.
