The Hidden Force Behind Pakistan’s Rising ICT Exports

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s information and communication technology sector showed strong performance in the current fiscal year. Official data revealed that ICT export remittances grew by 19.78 percent during July to January of FY 2025–26.

Total ICT exports reached $2.61 billion in the first seven months. This is a significant increase from $2.18 billion recorded in the same period last year. The steady rise highlights growing global demand for Pakistan’s digital services.

According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, ICT services exports stood at $374 million in January 2026. This figure shows a 19.5 percent increase compared to $313 million in January 2025. The consistent monthly growth reflects stronger international confidence in Pakistan’s tech sector.

Experts say the rise is driven by better internet infrastructure and skilled professionals. A major factor is the increasing number of freelancers offering services worldwide. These freelancers work in fields such as software development, graphic design, and digital marketing.

Government initiatives also played a role in this progress. Authorities have focused on promoting IT exports and supporting startups. Training programs and tax incentives helped create more opportunities for freelancers and tech firms.

The ICT sector emerged as the top performer within Pakistan’s services industry. It outpaced all other categories in export earnings. “Other business services” ranked second, earning $1.21 billion during the same period.

Industry leaders believe competitive pricing gives Pakistan an advantage. Many global companies prefer hiring Pakistani freelancers due to quality and affordability. This trend helped strengthen foreign exchange inflows.

Improved digital platforms also contributed to the growth. Online marketplaces now connect freelancers directly with international clients. This reduces barriers and increases earning potential.

The ICT sector now plays a vital role in Pakistan’s economy. It creates jobs and boosts exports. The presence of thousands of freelancers also supports small households across the country.

Analysts expect the trend to continue in coming months. Rising digital demand and remote work culture support long-term growth. If policies remain stable, freelancers will likely remain key contributors.
