Punjab Halts Murree Brewery's Alcohol Exports to Ensure Local Supply

Murree Brewery Co. Ltd. expressed significant concern on Wednesday regarding the Punjab Excise Department’s halt on their alcoholic beverage exports.

The issue was brought to light by Saleem Mandviwalla, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, during a committee meeting where the Rawalpindi-based beverage company highlighted the substantial foreign exchange losses incurred due to this action.

The Excise Department questioned whether the company had met local demand for alcoholic beverages before proceeding with exports.

Mandviwalla emphasized that the Punjab government has no authority to interfere with exports, questioning the rationale behind the halt.

A representative from the Punjab government stated there were no issues with the company’s exports, prompting Mandviwalla to ask why the brewery sought parliamentary intervention.

The committee then directed the Punjab government to address the concerns raised by the Provincial Excise Department.
