Scientists Uncover 5 New ‘Fat Genes’ Are You At Risk?

A new scientific study has found that weight gain is not caused only by lifestyle choices but also by genetic factors. Researchers have identified 13 genes that increase the risk of obesity, including five that were discovered for the first time.

According to the study published in Nature Communications, obesity is not just a standalone health condition. It also raises the risk of serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and osteoarthritis.

Scientists examined the DNA of 850,000 people from six continents to better understand how genes influence body weight. Among the newly identified genes are YLPM1, RIF1, GIGYF1, SLC5A3, and GRM7. The remaining eight genes had been linked to obesity in earlier studies.

Experts said the findings provide valuable insight into how genes contribute to weight gain across different populations. This research highlights that some people may be more genetically prone to gaining weight, even if they follow a healthy lifestyle.

The discovery could lead to new, more effective treatments for obesity. By focusing on genetic causes, scientists hope to develop targeted medications that work better for individuals based on their DNA. This approach could also help improve health outcomes for communities that have been underrepresented in past studies.

Researchers believe that understanding the genetic side of obesity is crucial in addressing the growing global health issue. The study emphasizes that weight management should not be seen only as a matter of diet and exercise but as a complex condition influenced by multiple biological and environmental factors.

Overall, this breakthrough offers new hope for personalized treatments and a deeper understanding of how genes shape human health.
