Bilquis Edhi Passes Away After Lifetime of Humanitarian Service

Renowned social worker and philanthropist Bilquis Edhi passed away on 15 April 2022 at the age of 74 after a brief illness in Karachi. She was the wife of Abdul Sattar Edhi and a key figure in Edhi Foundation, Pakistanโ€™s largest welfare network. Her death marked the end of a remarkable era of humanitarian service in Pakistan.

Bilquis Edhi had been suffering from health complications for some time. She was admitted to a hospital in Karachi after a sudden drop in blood pressure. Doctors confirmed she had congestive heart failure and had previously undergone two heart bypass surgeries. She had also been unwell for about a month before her final hospitalization.

Despite her illness, Bilquis Edhi remained under observation and was initially reported to be in stable condition. However, her health later deteriorated, leading to her passing on 15 April 2022 after a short hospital stay.

She was a trained professional nurse and played a leading role in the Edhi Foundation. Over more than six decades, she dedicated her life to serving humanity. Her work focused on women, children, and abandoned infants across Pakistan.

Bilquis Edhi was widely respected for her efforts in child welfare. Her foundation placed thousands of โ€œjhoolasโ€ (cradles) across the country. These initiatives helped save more than 42,000 abandoned babies, providing care and dignity to countless lives.

She married Abdul Sattar Edhi in 1966 and became his lifelong partner in humanitarian work. Together, they built one of the most recognized welfare systems in the country. After her husbandโ€™s passing, Bilquis Edhi continued their shared mission with dedication.

Her family announced that funeral prayers would be held at New Memon Masjid in Kharadar after Zuhr prayers. She was laid to rest at Mewa Shah Graveyard according to her wishes. Her son, Faisal Edhi, said the family would continue her mission.

Leaders from across Pakistan expressed grief over her death. The President, Prime Minister, and other political figures praised her lifelong service. Many described Bilquis Edhi as a symbol of compassion and humanity.

Her passing left a deep impact on the nation. Bilquis Edhi will always be remembered for her unmatched contribution to social welfare and her lifelong commitment to helping those in need.
