Sylvester Stallone's 'Expend4bles' Faces Disappointing Opening Weekend at the Box Office

The Nun 2 performed well at the box office this weekend, but Barbie is still in the running at position 5, so Expend4bles couldn’t match that performance.

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone couldn’t prevent Expend4bles from having a disastrous opening weekend at the box office. The Nun 2 won the top place for a third consecutive week, according to analytics company Comscore, while the fourth chapter had the action-packed franchise’s worst opening weekend.

The Expendables 4 movie, which was produced by Lionsgate and Millennium, only made a disappointing $8.3 million at the box office. It featured a number of well-known actors, including Dolph Lundgren, Statham, Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, Megan Fox, and Stallone. The last movie in the series, which debuted with $15.8 million and went on to gross $214 million worldwide, was out over ten years ago.

However, times have undoubtedly changed as the movie was only just beaten out by The Nun 2, a horror film that took in $8.4 million in its opening week. The Warner Bros. project, a spinoff of the successful Conjuring series, has had a strong start. The sequel, which was directed by Michael Chaves, has already made over $69 million.

“It’s a star-studded franchise, but horror is a different situation,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. “It just seems like no matter what, if you’re scared in a movie theater a couple of times in an hour and a half or two, that’s worth the price of admission.”
