Mahira Khan Advocates for Structured Salaries and Artist Royalties in Pakistan’s Film Industry

Mahira Khan Advocates for Structured Salaries and Artist Royalties in Pakistan’s Film Industry

During a recent Eid Day One show with Vasey Chaudhry, Mahira Khan addressed long-standing salary issues in Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Her co-star from Aag Lagey Basti Main, Fahad Mustafa, was also present as she highlighted pay gaps between senior and junior actors.

Mahira Khan pointed out that many new actors work merely to “survive,” while established stars earn revenue with ease. She emphasized that the industry lacks a formal salary structure or artist protection system.

When asked about a past post advocating for royalties for performers, Mahira Khan said, “I think world over there is a certain amount that goes to artists as royalties. I’m not saying we should exactly follow Hollywood, but it is a system that ensures artists don’t go hungry.” She argued that Pakistan should implement a similar baseline system to safeguard its actors.

The actress further noted that broadcasters and TV channels often benefit from multiple revenue streams while artists struggle. “I feel if channels earn so much money, some of which we aren’t even aware of, artists like us still survive,” Mahira said, acknowledging her own success. She added that junior actors, supporting performers, technicians, and crew members often do not get the same opportunities.

Although organizations like the Actors Collective Trust (ACT) and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) exist, Mahira Khan said they have not effectively resolved these concerns. Veteran actress Naila Jaffery’s battle with cancer highlighted the issue, as she had to bear her own medical expenses.

Mahira Khan concluded that while she benefits from her prominence, she hopes for fair treatment for all actors and crew members in the industry. Her comments reflect a growing conversation about financial security, royalties, and proper compensation for artists in Pakistan.
