Malala Leads Apple TV Doc on Afghan Women

Apple Original Films has announced that it has secured the global rights to the documentary Bread & Roses, as per a statement released by the company. The documentary delves into the resilient resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban and is produced by Malala Yousafzai, Jennifer Lawrence, and Justine Ciarrocchi.

Bread & Roses chronicles the real-time struggles of three women as they endeavor to reclaim their autonomy. According to Apple, the documentary provides a poignant glimpse into the profound impact of the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021 on women’s rights and lives. Premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Bread & Roses is slated for a global release on Apple TV+ on June 21.

Director and producer Sahra Mani shed light on the themes explored in Bread & Roses, remarking, “The closure of girls’ schools in Afghanistan transcends mere feminist concerns; it is a matter of global security.” She emphasized, “The Taliban acknowledges that children of educated mothers are less susceptible to indoctrination and less likely to become future soldiers. The preservation and safety of our entire world hinge on keeping girls’ schools open in Afghanistan.”

Since its inception in November 2019, Apple TV+ has earned acclaim for being the first all-original streaming service to launch worldwide. Offering a diverse range of original content, including compelling dramas, comedic series, feature films, and groundbreaking documentaries, the platform is renowned for hosting the award-winning comedy Ted Lasso.
