Floods Worsen Across Punjab Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains

Floods worsen across Punjab as water levels rise sharply in major rivers, the Flood Forecasting Division reported. Heavy inflows at multiple barrages have intensified the flood situation in the province.

In the Sutlej River, water flow has surged to 327,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala, 137,000 cusecs at Head Sulemanki, 118,000 cusecs at Head Islam, and 438,000 cusecs at Head Panjnad. The Chenab River is also experiencing high floods, with 45,000 cusecs at Head Marala, 115,000 cusecs at Head Khanki, 120,000 cusecs at Qadirabad, 95,000 cusecs through Chiniot, and 438,000 cusecs at Head Trimmu.

The Ravi River continues to swell as well, carrying 30,000 cusecs at Jassar, 66,000 cusecs at Shahdara, 109,000 cusecs at Head Balloki, and 135,000 cusecs at Head Sidhnai. Authorities have issued alerts to district administrations, particularly in low-lying areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that over 2 million people have been affected, and more than 4,000 villages have been inundated. Rescue teams have evacuated hundreds of thousands, while 423 relief camps have been established across Punjab.

The floods worsen urban and rural areas, particularly in Gujrat, Sialkot, and Multan, where river breaches and heavy rainfall have displaced thousands of residents. Officials noted that controlled water releases from Indian dams have further aggravated the crisis.

The death toll has climbed past 50, and crops over 175,000 hectares have been destroyed. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, warning residents to remain vigilant as the monsoon rains persist.

Experts say that unless water levels are managed carefully, floods could worsen further in the coming days. Coordination between provincial authorities, rescue teams, and local communities remains critical to reducing damage and protecting lives.

The current situation highlights the urgent need for disaster preparedness and timely response to prevent further loss in flood-affected areas.
