The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police has introduced a new safety feature called the “Pink Button” to improve protection for women. The system will first be launched in Peshawar, with 68 devices placed in key locations.
According to the Central Police Office KP, the Pink Buttons will be installed in women’s markets, shopping centers, and near educational institutions. These devices are designed for women and other citizens who may need urgent police help.
The Pink Button connects directly to the Police Control Room. Once pressed, it sends both video and audio of the complainant, allowing police to respond quickly. Officials believe this initiative will help prevent harassment and provide immediate assistance in emergencies.
A similar project has already started in Punjab. On the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has installed panic buttons in women’s colleges and universities in Lahore. In the first phase, 39 institutions have been equipped, and the system will later expand to more than 450 colleges.
According to a PSCA spokesperson, the panic buttons are linked to the central control room and the Virtual Women Police Station. When activated, they alert police teams to respond without delay. The system is particularly useful for students who cannot access mobile phones during emergencies.
Currently, panic buttons are working at 122 sites in Lahore and 101 in other cities. Expanding them to educational institutions, the spokesperson said, is an important step toward building a safer environment for women in Punjab.
With KP now introducing its Pink Button system, both provinces are moving toward technology-driven solutions to improve women’s security and ensure swift police response in sensitive situations.
