The Punjab government has revised school timings across the province after the end of summer vacations. The move comes as authorities remain on high alert due to widespread flooding and rising river levels.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department, the new schedule will remain effective until October 15, 2025.
Single-shift schools will operate from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and close at 12:00 PM on Fridays. In double-shift schools, morning sessions will run from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, while Friday timings will end at 12:00 PM. The evening session will continue from 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM on weekdays and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Fridays.
Officials said the revised schedule was introduced to ensure a smooth academic transition after vacations while considering weather conditions and logistical challenges across the province.
Despite these measures, many parts of Punjab continue to face severe flooding. Overflowing rivers, including the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej, have disrupted daily life and forced schools in inundated areas to close temporarily. The flooding worsened after India released excess water into these rivers.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an “exceptionally high flood” alert for the Chenab River. PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia warned that a major flood wave could reach Head Marala within 48 hours due to heavy monsoon rains and water release from Indian dams.
“All district administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert. Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and field officers must be present in vulnerable areas,” Kathia stated.
The Punjab government has also directed local administrations to take immediate decisions on school closures in flood-affected districts to ensure student safety.
