Soldiers Guard Nepal Parliament Amid Curfew After Protests

Kathmandu: Armed soldiers guard Nepal’s parliament on Wednesday as streets remain deserted following two days of deadly anti-corruption protests. An indefinite curfew was imposed after Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned amid unrest.

The protests were sparked by a social media ban last week, which was later revoked after 19 people died on Monday when police used tear gas and rubber bullets to control the crowds.

Around the parliament, burnt vehicles and twisted metal littered the streets. Army firefighters worked to douse flames in the main hall, which was set ablaze by angry demonstrators on Tuesday. The exterior of the building was also charred.

“We are trying to normalise the situation first,” army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet said. “We are committed to protect the life and property of people.”

Armoured vehicles and soldiers guard the streets, which remain largely empty except for a few pedestrians. Shops and markets are closed, while other government buildings, including the Supreme Court and Oli’s residence, were set on fire during Tuesday’s unrest.

Flights were disrupted, with Kathmandu’s main airport closed until 6 p.m. (1215 GMT), an airport spokesperson confirmed.

The army said prohibitory orders would remain in place until Thursday morning. Media reports indicated that preparations are underway for talks between authorities and protesters, although details remain unclear.

Former Supreme Court judge Balaram K.C. urged protesters to form a negotiation team with army support to maintain law and order. He called for fresh elections and discussions on forming a caretaker government.

Most protesters were young people frustrated with the government’s perceived failure to fight corruption and create job opportunities. Nepal has long struggled with economic and political instability, and many citizens work abroad to send money home.

Wedged between India and China, Nepal’s recent unrest has drawn international attention. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for peace and stability, emphasizing Nepal’s security and prosperity.

Armoured vehicles and soldiers guard key areas, ensuring the curfew is maintained as authorities attempt to restore order in the capital.
