Karachi: Thado Dam overflows in Gadap on Wednesday, prompting authorities to declare an emergency in Malir’s Memon Goth. The overflow raised serious concerns about flooding in nearby areas.
According to officials, the rising water levels from the dam reached the M-9 Motorway. Floodwaters near Jamali Bridge submerged parts of the highway, disrupting traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad. Vehicles were forced to halt as water levels made the road unsafe for travel.
On the directives of the Chief Secretary, Karachi Commissioner immediately dispatched a response team to the site. To ease the situation, the Sindh government decided to breach the central divider of the M-9 Motorway. This move aimed to divert excess water and reduce pressure on the highway.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah instructed officials to ensure that the motorway is cleared as soon as possible. He also directed the administration to restore traffic flow at the earliest.
Meanwhile, areas in Gadap faced severe flooding. The local administration declared an emergency in Memon Goth to protect residents and begin rescue operations.
In a tragic development, a rickshaw and a car were swept away in the Thado stream. Residents reported that a woman was washed away, while another woman and the driver were trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Police confirmed the rising water level of the Konkar stream made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Rescue teams and police personnel are working to retrieve the vehicles and recover those trapped. Despite challenges, authorities continue efforts to minimize damage and ensure safety.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Karachi’s outskirts during heavy rains. As Thado Dam overflows, authorities remain on high alert to prevent further loss of life and property.
